5 Things You May Not Know About Tipping

Tipping is not a subject taught in most schools, yet it is an essential part of life. Here are five things you may not have known about tipping:

  • You are supposed to tip delivery people, from flowers to furniture. In fact, so few people tip them, that they act surprised when actually receiving a tip.
  • You tip a valet according to the car you drive, one or two dollars for less an expensive vehicle to $5+ for a Mercedes, Maseratis and the like. In some places, a $20 tip will keep your car up front.
  • You are supposed to tip the hotel valet when dropping off and picking up your car. You only tip when picking up the car at a restaurant. (Although I’ve heard different opinions of this. What do you think?)
  • You should tip the hotel clerk when you are checking in, especially if you travel often.
  • You are supposed to tip bellhops, porters, and taxi/car drivers $1-$2 per bag. Generally, I tip closer to $5 per bag because sometimes my bags are heavy.
